Wingfield Park on the Truckee River

This morning when I woke up, I checked the weather and saw 65 degrees and sunny and immediately wanted to take Mason to play in the River again. So I thought I would write about a different city ‘trail’ for everyone that doesn’t feel like driving far away to the mountains but wants to get in some quality outdoor time with their pooch!

Today I went to the Wingfield/Barbra Bennet Park right in the heart of downtown Reno. To get to this park, which is on the corner of S. Arlignton Ave. and Island Dr. , you can exit I-580 on Mill St. turn left on Mill St. and follow it up until you take a slight left onto Ryland St. then keep going onto Ryland and take a slight left onto Liberty St. From here follow Libery St. until it intersects with Arlington then turn right onto Arlington Ave. Arlington Ave. will take  you right to the river and you will turn left onto Island Dr. There is a lot of parking during the winter, but in the summer I’m sure the spots fill up quickly.

I’m sure by know you all know I am a rule breaker and I turn a blind eye to all the signs that say “KEEP DOGS LEASHED” What fun is it if they can’t run and play?

I love this part of the river because it has been transformed into a kayak park with rapids and pools to swim in and the bank is lined with huge boulders that you can sit or walk on while you puppy swims.

There are tons of ducks and geese and pigeons for your dog to play with. But be careful where you let your dog go in the water because at some parts the current is really strong and they might get sucked down a little rapid!

This park gives you a beautiful view of downtown Reno and offers many other things such as tennis, a park, basketball, kayaks, tubes and swimming during the summer. It is the perfect place for the city lover to explore on a weekend day!

Have you ever gone to Wingfield park with your dog? If not check this place out and start enjoying the Truckee River before it gets too crowded!

Until next time,
Happy Trails!
